| US 202 is primarily a four-lane arterial roadway between Gulph
Road and Norristown Borough, but within the borough it becomes part of the
local street system. Improving traffic flow on US 202 through Norristown
was examined under the Section 600 Environmental Impact Study. Within Norristown
Borough, US 202 North (DeKalb Street) is owned and maintained by PennDOT;
US 202 South (Markley Street) is owned and maintained by the borough.
Preliminary engineering and environmental study began in 2002 for the
reconstruction and widening of Markley Street (US 202 South) in Norristown.
Final design is expected to begin in 2005 and construction is expected
to start in 2008. Norristown Borough decided in 1996 to keep two-way traffic
pattern on Markley Street. PennDOT and Norristown Borough entered into
an agreement to transfer ownership of Markley Street (currently borough
owned) for Airy Street (currently state owned) at the completion of construction.
PennDOT held a public meeting on Sept. 25, 2003 at Eisenhower Middle
School to present the proposed improvements along Markley Street and Johnson
Highway.
A $750,000 CMAQ project was approved in Norristown to upgrade traffic
signals. PENNDOT completed final design and construction is expected to
begin in 2004.
In 1998-99, PENNDOT invested $3.6 million to repair and rehabilitate
2.6 miles of US 202 between Gulph Road and the Dannehower Bridge in Upper
Merion Township and Bridgeport Borough.
