King of Prussia, PA – Lane and ramp closures will be in place next weekend on northbound U.S. 202 between the Boot Road and U.S. 30 interchanges in East Whiteland and West Whiteland townships, Chester County, to complete a traffic shift on the northbound bridge over Amtrak, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
From 10:00 PM Friday, February 2, to 10:00 AM Saturday, February 3, the right lane will be closed on northbound U.S. 202 approaching the work area as crews prepare to shift a single lane of northbound traffic onto the rebuilt inside half of the bridge Saturday morning. During the operation, a single lane of northbound traffic will travel through the work area using the northbound express lane that has been established on the southbound side of the expressway.
During the Express Lane traffic shift, northbound U.S. 202 motorists will not have access to the exit ramp to U.S. 30. The detour will direct northbound U.S. 202 motorists to continue to the Route 401 (Conestoga Road) Interchange and turn right onto Route 401 (Conestoga Road) to reach U.S. 30 (Lancaster Avenue).
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the construction area because slowdowns will occur. The work schedule is weather dependent.
The traffic shift marks the completion of the first stage of rehabilitation of the northbound bridge over the Amtrak rail lines at the southern end of the U.S. 202/U.S. 30 Interchange that began in March 2017. During that stage, crews rehabilitated the left side of the northbound structure, cleaning and refurbishing the steel superstructure and replacing the concrete deck and parapets.
Following the shift, crews will begin approximately six months of work to remove the existing concrete deck and parapets; rehabilitate the steel superstructure; and redeck the outside half of the northbound bridge.
When work on the northbound bridge is completed in mid-2018, a new traffic pattern will be established in the work zone for rehabilitation of the southbound bridge. That new pattern will move two lanes of northbound traffic onto the northbound bridge and establish a single southbound express lane on the northbound structure.
One lane of southbound traffic will then be maintained on the southbound bridge while the southbound structure is rehabilitated and redecked a half-at-a-time.
PennDOT completed replacement of the deteriorated concrete pavement on the outer lane of the two-lane southbound U.S. 202 ramp to U.S. 30/Exton Bypass in December 2017. The concrete pavement on the inner lane of the two-lane off-ramp will be replaced at night and on weekends under temporary work zone traffic patterns beginning in early spring. Those temporary patterns will be removed each morning by 5:00 AM to provide motorists two-lanes on the ramp during peak travel times.
Deteriorated concrete on the ramp from the eastbound U.S. 30/Exton Bypass to northbound U.S. 202 will be replaced beginning this spring.
The work is part of a $26.4 million project to rehabilitate the northbound and southbound U.S. 202 bridges over Amtrak and the adjacent U.S. 30 ramp, and to remove and replace deteriorated concrete pavement on the U.S. 202 ramps to and from the U.S. 30/Exton Bypass.
